Chia Reference Client 2.4.0 Released: Enhanced Wallet Sync, Observer Wallets, and More
New Wallet Sync Protocol Fully Implemented
The Chia reference client version 2.4.0 now features a fully implemented wallet sync protocol. Initially introduced in version 2.3.0, this protocol from CHIP-26 brought response pagination, advanced coin subscriptions, and improved reorg handling. With the latest release, users will experience enhanced performance in wallet syncing as relevant transactions update in real-time within the mempool.
Introducing Observer Wallets for Enhanced Privacy
Version 2.4.0 introduces observer wallets, a new feature designed to improve privacy and security. Unlike previous versions where the wallet stored each public/private key pair locally, observer wallets store only the public key. This setup allows users to view their wallet's history and balance without risking fund theft from local computer access. Although currently set up via CLI, future releases will support full GUI implementation. For setup guidance, refer to the observer wallet guide.
Increased Block Fill to 70%
Continuing efforts to maximize block utilization, Chia has increased the block fill rate to 70% in this release. This progressive enhancement aims to reach 100% by the second half of 2024, ultimately enabling the network to process up to 40 transactions per second (TPS).
Soft Fork for BLS Implementation Update
This release includes a soft fork to align Chia's BLS implementation with industry standards, specifically disallowing infinity G1 points. Scheduled to activate at block 5,940,000 in September 2024, users are urged to upgrade to version 2.4.0 or later to ensure continued network compatibility.
Discontinuing Big Sur Support
Version 2.4.0 marks the final release supporting macOS 11 (Big Sur). Following Apple's discontinuation of Big Sur support in September 2023, users are encouraged to upgrade their operating systems before the next Chia release.
Final Thoughts
The release of Chia reference client 2.4.0 brings significant improvements and new features aimed at enhancing user experience and network performance. With a fully implemented wallet sync protocol, observer wallets, and increased block utilization, this update sets the stage for further advancements in the Chia network. Users should upgrade promptly to benefit from these enhancements and prepare for the upcoming soft fork.
